These beautiful birds will be arriving in our area at the end of November and staying with us until May. An easy way to remember those arrival and departure times, is to think of them coming to stay with you for Thanksgiving, and staying until Mother's Day.
Goldfinches roam widely between food supplies during the winter and have been recorded moving over 4 miles between multiple feeding stations in a single day. Other records show movements of over 30 miles in a single winter. So keep your finch feeders clean and filled with fresh Thistle to increase your chances of seeing these birds this winter. American Goldfinches will use almost any feeder, including ones that require them to hang upside down to eat. Studies have shown their preference is to sit upright at perches on feeders that are hung in trees above head height.
Of the more than 3 million banded American Goldfinches, the oldest one ever recaptured in the wild was at least 10 years and 5 months old! So who knows, you may be hosting an old friend year after year at your feeder.
